GDC Travelogue Day 3: Look at All the Homeless People

Wednesday, Feb 20

8:00 am - No repeats of yesterday, today I pack an umbrella. However, by the time I get to the city, the rain has stopped… and the sky is cloudless. Great, now I get to look like a moron all day long.

11:30 am - I just got my first look at Street Fighter IV in person and… woah boy, is this going to be a blast from the past. Fans of the original are going to fall in love all over again, and I can’t even imagine how many new gamers this will attract. Oh man, I want this to be out NOW.

3:30 pm - Had a meeting with Running with Scissors about Postal 3. Those guys are totally warped, but they’re also hilarious and know their audience better than about any other developer. The preview will go into more depth, but right now I’ll say that this is one sick game, and I can’t wait to play it.

4:30 pm - I was supposed to meet with the developers of Edge of Twilight but they got called away to another meeting. Instead, I talked with the head of Queensland Games, which is a really cool concept they have down in Australia. You see, QG is a sort of developer co-op, with a bunch of different companies working under the same roof. It’s cool, because now employees of different companies can get together and brainstorm and work through challenges. One of the studios (Chrome) is actually working on the Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed which I’ll talk more about in tomorrow’s wrap-up. ;)

6:30 pm - Saw Gamecock’s two latest titles, Hail to the Chimp and Insecticide. Both of them look like they’ll be more fun than I had expected, and they’ve given me some of the best schwag so far. Yay for free junk!

Hmm, Demigod actually looks rather cool. My initial thought after looking at the screens was: “Ok, finally the giants from Shadow of the Colossus get to fight something their own size”. And hopefully win once in a while. Losing to the skinny little boy and his horse must have been terribly embarassing :)

I am always careful with these types of games though, they have a terrible legacy of always disappointing me at the end. It’s not really a genre of its own per say, but any game where you control something giant (like a mech or a colossus) definitely has its own set of special challenges that aren’t always well-resolved. The only game in recent memory where I actually had unspoilt fun with a mountain-sized beast was Giants: Citizen Kabuto. But I always hold out hope for the future, the hopeless romantic that I am :)

So to what extent (if any) do you actually control the armies that are shown surrounding the Demigods? Is it at the level of Warcraft? Or is it more high-level?

Demigod actually looks really cool. I’m not a huge RTS/RPG guy so I can’t speak well to what it most resembles, but it does sort of remind me of the LotR: BfME games. I’d love to see a playable demo, there’s some good potential here.
